Getting to the Root of Root Canals

What is a root canal?

The root canal refers to the cavity in the center of the tooth, beneath the translucent protective layer of enamel and the hard white layer of dentin. The root canal naturally contains soft tissue called pulp which is made up of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues. Like any soft tissue in the body, the root canal is susceptible to infection which can jeopardize the integrity and health of the tooth and the entire mouth. By understanding the causes, treatment, and prevention of root canals, you can maintain the integrity of your smile.

The causes and symptoms of root canal problems

When the tooth nerve tissue or pulp is damaged, it begins to disintegrate, making space for bacteria to multiply and cause infection and inflammation. Infection of the nerve tissue is most commonly caused by a deep cavity, tooth decay, or periodontal (gum) disease. A tooth becomes more vulnerable to root canal problems if it has undergone repeated dental procedures or if the tooth is cracked or chipped. A trauma to the face or injury to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. An untreated root canal only gets worse. Gradually, the infection can spread beyond the pulp and lead to an abscessed tooth characterized by pain, swelling, redness of the surrounding gums, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and even trouble breathing or swallowing in severe cases.

Root Canal Treatment Saskatoon

A damaged or infected tooth may be saved with root canal treatment. This is a commonly utilized procedure in which the inflamed or infected soft tissue (the pulp of the tooth) is removed and the pulp chamber or root canal is cleaned and permanently filled to prevent reinfection of the canal. This preserves the integrity of the rest of the tooth, helps you maintain your natural smile, continue eating the foods you love and limits the need for escalated dental work. With proper care, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime. The team at Acadia Dental is ready to tackle your root canal filling in Saskatoon.

Root canal prevention

Even though treatment is an option, prevention is the easiest, cheapest and most comfortable option available. Root canal prevention starts with a good oral hygiene routine, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups Saskatoon. If your dentist detects any cavities or early signs of decay, it should be addressed as soon as possible to prevent the cavity from expanding to become an abscessed tooth and root canal infection requiring treatment. Having a cavity filled is much less cumbersome than having root canal treatment, so preventative measures should be taken seriously. For further prevention, avoid chewing ice and hard foods and be mindful when engaging in activities that could lead to a cracked or chipped tooth. Wearing a mouthguard at night and while playing sports will protect your teeth from damage. Avoid acidic and high-sugar foods that break down the enamel and breed bacteria that cause decay.
